Important Information

Photos required:

Simply upload photos via your mobile; no need to post the original documents. Costs start from $25 (¥90), priced according to the selected turnaround time. You will see the total price before payment.

Pricing is based on the number of people on the registration card; the starting price includes 3 people, with $10 for each additional person.

Translations are prepared and signed by NAATI certified translators, and are accepted by the Department of Home Affairs, state transport departments, universities, and professional assessment bodies.

What does the certified translation look like?

One electronic PDF: the cover page contains the translator's declaration and verification code, which can be scanned to check the authenticity of the certified translation; photos of the original documents you provided are attached at the end, so the receiving party can compare them item by item. Each page has one framed section, with the page order following the original (notes page first), and each person's registration card in its own section.

Common issues when translating a hukou booklet

Page order follows the original, not the upload order

The notes page, head-of-household page, each person's registration card and amendment pages are arranged in the order they appear in the hukou booklet itself.

Amendment and continuation pages must not be missed

Handwritten entries and stamps are translated along with everything else; moves in and out and marriage changes are often recorded on these pages.

Addresses from smallest to largest unit

Proper names are written in pinyin and generic terms use the standard translation: 上海市静安区 is written as Jing'an District, Shanghai.

The booklet number is reproduced in its original colour

The number in the top-right corner of the notes page is often red, so it is also printed in red on the certified translation.

    FAQ

Which pages of the hukou booklet need translating?
Generally the head-of-household page, the notes page and the registration cards of each person relevant to the application; include any pages with amendment records. Which pages to submit is determined by the receiving organisation.
Can I translate only my own page?
Yes. However, when proving a family relationship, the receiving party usually needs to see the head-of-household page and the registration cards of the relevant members, so please confirm before submitting.
How is a hukou booklet priced?
Pricing is based on the number of people listed on the registration cards, not the number of photos; the starting price and how many people it covers is shown at the top of this page.
Do the handwritten entries and stamps need translating?
Yes. All legible text on the original documents is translated; the text inside stamps is noted, and anything unclear is faithfully marked as such.
What if a family is split across two hukou booklets?
Send photos of both booklets; a separate certified translation is produced for each, and they are quoted together in the same order.
    Do former names need translating?
Yes. Former names are transliterated into pinyin as shown on the original and listed separately from the current name.
Can a notarised copy of a hukou booklet be translated?
Yes. Whether the receiving organisation requires a certified translation of the hukou booklet itself or of the notarised copy is determined by that organisation.
If the head of household has passed away or moved out, can the hukou booklet still be used?
Whether it can be used is decided by the receiving organisation. The certified translation reflects the booklet as it currently stands, including any cancellation or removal records.
Which Australian official agencies can the certified translations be submitted to?
Certified translations bearing the stamp and signature of a NAATI certified translator can be submitted to the Australian Department of Home Affairs (Immigration), state transport departments (for licence conversion), courts, notaries, universities and professional assessing bodies. Please check with the receiving agency if they have any specific additional requirements.
How long does it take to get the certified translation?
This depends on the turnaround time selected when placing your order. Once paid, the certified translation will be issued within your chosen timeframe. You will receive an email and collection link once it is ready.
Can the electronic PDF version be submitted directly?
Yes. Most Australian agencies accept electronic PDF certified translations, such as online submissions to the Department of Home Affairs. If an agency requires a hard copy, a colour printout will suffice. We recommend confirming the receiving agency's requirements before submission.
How can the receiving agency verify the authenticity of the certified translation?
Every certified translation is printed with a unique trace code and digital fingerprint. The receiving agency can enter the trace code or upload the PDF on an independent verification platform to check whether the certified translation matches the originally issued version.
