What does the certified translation look like?

One electronic PDF: the cover page contains the translator's declaration and verification code, which can be scanned to check the authenticity of the certified translation; the original documents you photographed are attached at the end, so the receiving party can compare them item by item. The main page, the category code table on the back, and the duplicate page each occupy one panel, in the same order as the original document.

Common issues when translating a hukou booklet

Names are transliterated, not translated by meaning

「李雨霏」 is written as Yufei LI, not Rain LI; the surname is capitalised and placed last, spelled exactly as in the passport.

The licence number and the file number are two different numbers

The licence number is printed on the main page; the file number is printed only on the duplicate page. If you only photograph the main page, the file number will be blank.

Vehicle categories are written as codes only

C1 is written as is; its meaning is explained by the vehicle category code table on the back. If the back page is not photographed, I will also attach this nationally uniform table with a note.

The issuing authority is taken from the seal

The full name of the authority in the red seal at the bottom left of the main page is translated word for word, not abbreviated as 'Public Security Bureau'.

FAQ

How long can you drive in Australia with a Chinese driver licence?
Regulations vary by state. Generally, temporary visa holders can drive using their Chinese driver licence and an English certified translation for the duration of their visa; once you become a permanent resident, you must convert to a local licence within a specified timeframe, which varies by state. Please check the official website of your state transport department.
Do transport departments accept NAATI certified translations when converting a local licence?
Yes. State transport authorities (such as Service NSW and VicRoads) generally accept English certified translations produced by NAATI-certified translators. Please check with the transport authority for submission requirements.
Do I need to take a photo of the licence counterpart as well?
Yes. The counterpart shows the file number, and some agencies check it. Please make sure to photograph both the front and back of the main page as well as the counterpart.
Do I need to photograph the back of the driver licence?
It's better if you do. The back contains the vehicle category code table; if it isn't photographed, I will attach this nationally uniform table and note it.
Which Australian licence is C1 equivalent to?
That is for the transport authority to decide. The certified translation faithfully renders the code and includes the code table from the back for the transport authority to compare.
Can an expired driver licence still be translated?
Yes. The certified translation reproduces the validity period as shown on the original document; whether an expired licence can be used for exchange is decided by the transport authority.
Can the electronic driver licence on my mobile be translated?
Yes, just upload the screenshots. Please confirm with the transport authority first whether it accepts certified translations of electronic driver licences.
My passport spelling differs from the standard pinyin. What should I do?
You will be asked to check your name before payment; tell me the spelling in your passport and the certified translation will follow it.
Which Australian official agencies can the certified translations be submitted to?
Certified translations bearing the stamp and signature of a NAATI certified translator can be submitted to the Australian Department of Home Affairs (Immigration), state transport departments (for licence conversion), courts, notaries, universities and professional assessing bodies. Please check with the receiving agency if they have any specific additional requirements.
How long does it take to get the certified translation?
This depends on the turnaround time selected when placing your order. Once paid, the certified translation will be issued within your chosen timeframe. You will receive an email and collection link once it is ready.
Can the electronic PDF version be submitted directly?
Yes. Most Australian agencies accept electronic PDF certified translations, such as online submissions to the Department of Home Affairs. If an agency requires a hard copy, a colour printout will suffice. We recommend confirming the receiving agency's requirements before submission.
How can the receiving agency verify the authenticity of the certified translation?
Every certified translation is printed with a unique trace code and digital fingerprint. The receiving agency can enter the trace code or upload the PDF on an independent verification platform to check whether the certified translation matches the originally issued version.
